Horology

Horology is the scientific study of time. Much of it is devoted to the mechanics of measuring it. Science devised metrics that are demonstrably accurate, to a point. Science has a creation theory that drastically differs from religious theories that derive their beliefs from hearsay, from a book written in ancient times, and what is described as direct communication with God.

What emerge are two contrasting beliefs, one scientific, one religious. There is a huge problem with beliefs. People don’t want to relinquish them. Opposing beliefs cause conflicts that result in war, injustice, and poverty. Conflict is bad behavior whether you stand on the intellectual high ground, the moral high ground, neither, or both.

What remains unknown grows astronomically faster than our capacity to learn. The purpose of learning determines its utility. Is the purpose of science is to humiliate the ignorant? Is the purpose of religion to denigrate the immoral?

There is exactly one purpose for learning that makes sense, ecology. All education is ecology, or it isn’t educational. We share one environment. We need to protect it. Nature is already smart. It will continue to exist even if we don’t.

Horology is concerned with the precision of history’s timeline. While there is much to learn about the future by looking in the rearview mirror, we probably should be more interested in where we are going than where we have been.

Humans are not fast enough, strong enough, or smart enough to survive as individuals. They take a quarter of a century to mature. Their lives don’t begin on their birthday, nor do they end the day their bodies are interred. One part life is the chain of DNA that began with early ancestors, and it will continue until there are no more offspring. The other part is history. People are their history, the the genetic part, and the environmental part. They have a hugely significant scientifically observable force at their disposal that, as of yet has gone unstudied. It is a force that, if people decide to use it, will improve each individual, the world they all inhabit, and the world they will pass to new generations.

The force is economic, a natural economic force that exists in nature regardless of whether, or not people use it. What each person does is important. They are not genetically fit to be independent, or to become efficient predators. The human battle is to avoid harm by cooperating to avoid harm, and to produce benefit by trying to produce benefit cooperatively. Harming the environment nullifies its benefits, and the harm is passed to new generations along with a toxic harmful culture that goes along as part of the package.

Education is what needs to change. Educating people to become predators is neither smart, nor is it educational. The word education indicates that there is some. Teaching people to fall into the same holes people have been falling into for last three thousand years is not educational. It is educational failure.

Civilization is the single environment solution to eliminate war, injustice, poverty, anxiety, depression, and despair. Of what benefit will it be if we precisely calibrate the timeline of antiquity, and poison the environment we share with each other, and share with the future. Our celestial lifeboat requires care. Economics is a unifying force. It is virtually the only available force that can deliver humanity from the harm that it has been inflicting on itself.

Progress

Progress is toward humanity. It is never accidental. Progress is achieved in small increments by trying. Trying exerts progressive pressure. Not trying yields resistance to progress. Opposition to progress is harmful to humanity, inhumane.

Although biologists categorize people as belonging to the animal kingdom. People are not animals because they have an attribute not shared by the animal kingdom. That attribute is the ability to make progress. The entirety of humanity is like a single animal, in that it either builds a nest for the future, or it cannot survive the devastation of the past. When people act like animals humanity suffers, both in terms of longevity and the quality of life.

Progress is scientific, economic, political, and religious. Its absence is recognized as harm to individuals, harm to their environment, and harm to their happiness. Progress is how people build a better future, but they are incapable of building it for themselves. They build it for other people, many of whom they have never met or never will meet. Those people live in other places, or in other generations. Individuals thrive because people who preceded them left a habitat filled with opportunity.

Inheritance is genetic, social, and economic. All three are strengthened by diversity. There is exactly one environment shared across genetic, political, and generational boundaries. Progress is how to make the world more habitable. People lack the necessary genetic characteristics to survive as animals. Each person is a part of the body of humanity. Will that body smile and celebrate human effort, or will it become extinct, because it failed to understand that humanity is not a gift, but a reward for seizing the opportunity to progress toward becoming more humane?

Economic Triangle

Unlike other species, people are socially capable of improving who they are by improving the habitat they share with others across physical and generational boundaries. Economy is ecological. It is based on the premise that people can affect environmental betterment. That betterment is economic. Failure is not. It is not economic. Economic failure is antinomic.

This paragraph contains natural uncontaminated definitions of education and economy. In nature there is an economic triangle. The triangle is frozen in time. It is based on possibility. People have the ability make changes. The changes are either for better, or for worse. Otherwise their values are undetermined, unknown, and unsafe. Study is required to understand the effect of changes on humanity. Learning to identify the triangulated locations of each change to ascertain whether it does antinomic harm or produces economic benefit is educational. Education that fails to establish this foundational study fails its mission, to increase the ability to affect change by learning how to avoid harm and to maximize benefit for humanity. Educational failure is not education but a superstitious ideology that lowers the capability, the sustainability, and the desirability of being human.

Think of earth being on one side of the triangle, between harm and benefit. Possibility is the third angle that lies opposite the line connecting harm and benefit. The angle increases with effort and study. Effort and study increases the ability to affect change, but change that causes harm is not economic. It repels economic possibility. For example war, injustice, and poverty all reduce the possibility of people to affect change by seriously wounding economy. With little economy people are vulnerable to the inhumanity that surrounds them. Inhumanity shrinks and degrades the habitat that all people are compelled to share, eroding the possibility of improving it.

Each moment there is a new triangle. The possibilities are inherited from all of the previous triangles. Doing harm drastically increases the cost of producing benefit for humanity. As people learn more, they affect more change. Understanding the economic triangle gives people a choice. Live, to build a brighter future for humanity, or die, failing to protect it.
